Compared to the previous period, Q2 2025 saw increased payment card use across retailers in Serbia. Namely, in Q2 2025, 185.5 million purchases were made by cards issued by domestic payment service providers, which is an increase of 18.4% y-o-y. Foreign tourists made 13.9 million purchases, or 8.9% more than in the same period of 2024.

The continuation of this trend contributed to an average semi-annual growth rate of card-based transactions of 20.5% over the past 5 years. This means that the total number of transactions made by payment cards at POS terminals increased 2.1 times, from 177.7 million purchases in 2021 to 375.1 million in 2025. The share of transactions carried out by foreign tourists rose negligibly over the years, reaching 6.7% in the first half of 2025, while the major part of purchases – 93.3% were made by cards issued by domestic payment service providers.

   

At end-June 2025, Serbian merchants operated over 177 thousand POS terminals, up by 19.0% from mid-2024. Their number went up by 61.4% relative to five years ago when the POS network included 110 thousand POS terminals. Apart from that, the network of ATMs where citizens can withdraw money and perform other services numbered 3,196 machines in mid-2025 – an increase by 2.0% y-o-y or by 2.4% relative to mid-2021.
