The archive material held by the National Bank of Serbia is of exceptional cultural and historical value. It spans the entire period from incorporation of the Privileged National Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia in 1884 to the present day, and documents not only the history of the National Bank as an important state institution, but also the history of the entire country, its development, European integration and modernization. Throughout its rich history of economic and financial activities, the National Bank influenced and was influenced by social and political changes. Its scope of activity also changed quite frequently (Kingdom of Serbia, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, German occupation, SFRY, FRY, SCG, Republic of Serbia), making the National Bank of Serbia one of the most historically interesting issuing central banks of Europe.

The wealth of documents stored in the archives of the National Bank, consisting of archive funds and fund units of several thousand meters in quantity, is undoubtedly an important historical source for studying banking, economic and overall social history of Serbia, Yugoslavia and South East Europe.

Particularly relevant at the moment is the series of documents on confiscation of property and payment of compensation for property confiscated on account of Expropriation (for the 1950–1958 period) and Agricultural Land Fund (1953–early 1970s).
