Instant payments show no signs of slowing down

In Q1 2025, the NBS IPS system processed 24.4 million fast, instant payments — an increase of 24.6% compared to Q1 2024. In addition to the growing number of transactions, the value of payments also rose by 40.1%, reaching RSD 294.6 billion. This growth confirms a five-year trend: on average, the number of payments in each first quarter of the year has increased by 30.6% y-o-y, while the average value has grown by 42.9%.

During Q1 2025, the average transaction value was RSD 12,090, while the average daily number of payments executed was 270,736 — over 55,000 more than in the same quarter of 2024. The daily record number of payments processed by the NBS IPS system was first broken on 15 January and then again on 14 February, when 453,656 instant payments were executed.[1]

Apart from making instant credit transfers to any payee with a current account in a bank, the NBS IPS payment system enables the following:

  • payment of monthly bills for utility and other services by scanning the unique NBS IPS QR code printed on the bill/invoice;
  • payment at brick-and-mortar and online points-of-sale using the IPS Scan and IPS Show options;
  • payment by IPS Scan at online points-of-sale, where payment is executed via deep link technology in a few clicks;
  • payment using the Transfer service – a designated payee’s code, i.e. mobile phone number;
  • the Generator/Validator services (available on the NBS website) which enable the generation (technical preparation) and validation (technical verification) of the NBS IPS QR code.

Payments via the NBS IPS system are available at numerous points of sale across Serbia. Among the merchants offering the instant payment option are the retail chain Mercator S, including Idea, Roda, and Mercator stores, NIS Petrol, Gazprom, and OMV gas stations, the bookstores Laguna and Vulkan, electronics stores Tehnomanija and Tehnomedia, as well as the Lilly pharmacy and drugstore chain. Additionally, instant payments are supported on the e-commerce platform Ananas.rs, as well as many other physical and online points of sale, enabling fast and easy payments without the use of cards or cash.

On the eGovernment portal – ePay (euprava.gov.rs), instant payment of fees and charges for services provided by the Ministry of the Interior and the Tax Administration is enabled by scanning the NBS IPS QR code displayed on the uniform payment slip generated on this portal.

Please note the “Transfer” service, which offers users the advantage of easily transferring funds from one account to another using the recipient’s phone number registered with their bank for the service. The list of banks that provide this service is available on the Instant Payments Serbia website, under the Services Overview section. Registration for the service is very simple and is quickly completed within the mobile banking application itself. More information about the registration and other benefits is available in the NBS’s “Good to Know” section – “Transfer” service.
