On 31 May 2017 the NBS hosted a presentation of the World Bank report “Review of the Market for Remittances in Serbia” prepared within the Remittances and Payment Program, financed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
The report was developed by the World Bank expert team, in cooperation with the NBS, observing the best international standards and practice. Following a comprehensive analysis and a detailed overview of the Serbian remittances market, the report identified key activities which may increase the efficiency of these transactions.
As summarized in the presentation, Serbia already has in place a well-developed payment systems infrastructure, an adequate legal framework, high level of consumer protection and appropriate redress mechanisms, and has created the necessary preconditions for further development of the market of remittances and electronic payments in general. Representatives of the World Bank and the NBS also presented proposals of measures and activities which should contribute to further development of a more competitive remittances market and reduce remittances costs. On this occasion the NBS reconfirmed its strategic commitment and readiness to contribute, as so far, to the development of the remittances market and to increase the utilization of electronic transfer channels, expecting that other payment operations participants, including foreign ones, will join the central bank’s efforts.
Together with the NBS representatives, representatives of the Swiss Embassy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, commercial banks, payment institutions and other interested organisations also attended the presentation.
