Stable growth of instant payments in H1 2025

Since the launch of the NBS IPS payment system in October 2018, instant payments have become an increasingly common method of payment in Serbia, significantly accelerating the country’s payment operations. Citizens and businesses now have access to fast money transfers from account to account, further simplified through the “Transfer” service using a mobile phone number, mobile phone purchases in stores or online shops, as well as bill and invoice payments by scanning the NBS IPS QR code.

In H1 2025, the NBS IPS payment system processed 50.7 million fast, instant payments, which is an increase of 24.8% compared to the same period a year earlier. In addition to the higher number of transactions, the total value of payments also rose by 37.1%, amounting to RSD 628.7 billion in H1. This growth is also significant when viewed over a five-year period – the number of executed payments in the first half of the current year was 2.7 times higher than in the same period of 2021, while the total value of payments increased 3.9 times.

Looking only at Q2 2025, the number of payments increased by 25% compared to the same quarter of 2024 — rising from 21.1 million to 26.4 million. During the same period, the total value of payments grew by 34.5% — from RSD 248.3 billion to 334.1 billion. In Q2 2025, the average transaction value amounted to RSD 12,673, while the average daily number of executed payments was 289,673 — 58,000 more than in the same quarter of 2024. The daily record for the number of payments executed through the NBS IPS system during Q2 was broken for the first time on 15 April, again on 5 May, and for the third time on 15 May, when the highest number of instant payments so far was recorded — 484,175.

Apart from making instant credit transfers to any payee with a current account in a bank, the NBS IPS payment system enables the following:

  • payment of monthly bills for utility and other services by scanning the unique NBS IPS QR code printed on the bill/invoice;
  • payment at brick-and-mortar and online points-of-sale using the IPS Scan and IPS Show options;
  • payment by IPS Scan at online points-of-sale, where payment is executed via deep link technology in a few clicks;
  • payment using the Transfer service – a designated payee’s code, i.e. mobile phone number;
  • the Generator/Validator services (available on the NBS website) which enable the generation (technical preparation) and validation (technical verification) of the NBS IPS QR code.

Payments via the NBS IPS system are available at numerous points of sale across Serbia. Among the merchants offering the instant payment option are the retail chain Mercator S, including Idea, Roda, and Mercator stores, NIS Petrol, Gazprom, and OMV gas stations, the bookstores Laguna and Vulkan, electronics stores Tehnomanija and Tehnomedia, as well as the Lilly pharmacy and drugstore chain. Additionally, instant payments are supported on the e-commerce platform Ananas.rs, as well as many other physical and online points of sale, enabling fast and easy payments without the use of cards or cash.

On the eGovernment portal – ePay (euprava.gov.rs), instant payment of fees and charges for services provided by the Ministry of the Interior and the Tax Administration is enabled by scanning the NBS IPS QR code displayed on the uniform payment slip generated on this portal.

Please note the “Transfer” service, which offers users the advantage of easily transferring funds from one account to another using the recipient’s phone number registered with their bank for the service. The list of banks that provide this service is available on the Instant Payments Serbia website, under the Services Overview section. Registration for the service is very simple and is quickly completed within the mobile banking application itself. More information about the registration and other benefits is available in the NBS’s “Good to Know” section – “Transfer” service.

You can find accurate and timely information about instant payments and their advantages as the most modern and fastest payment method on the IPS website (Instant Payments Serbia).
